Superman? Snail, More LIke It.
Today I weighed myself for the first time in a couple of weeks, dreading the result. The scale showed 179.2. It was a shock. Just short of 180 pounds, this was the most I ever weighed, and quantified the reason I had to order larger-waist pants this week. At age 53 I guess I should not be surprised at a waistline that tends to expand, but after I read the scale I felt an urgency just short of panic to push back hard and reverse the trend. I removed my Superman t-shirt from my drawer, hesitating for a moment: Would anyone think I have too high an opinion of myself? Not a chance: Onlookers would see the Superman symbol as ironic. Oh, well. So, I jogged again today. As I bumped along the sidewalk a song kept running through my mind. The song is Snails by a band called The Format. The words go "Snails see the benefits/The beauty in every inch . . ." Now, there were snails on the sidewalk. But were they the inspiration for the song in my head, or was it me?
