Micro-Forks
I made a decision tonight. It wasn't very significant, really, but it was a difficult call just the same. I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but the wise and prudent thing to do was different. It's not always this way, thankfully. Sometimes the thing we want to do is perfectly fine. Tonight, though, my wish and my "better judgment" were distinct. I went with "better judgment" this time (but I don't always). Now I'm happy about the choice. It seems to me that we face these tiny dilemmas often—several times a day, maybe. Perhaps we confront forks in the road—maybe mini-forks or even micro-forks—hundreds of times a day, passing through most with little awareness. They add up, though. I have a friend, Rodger, who over breakfast years ago philosophized that each of us necessarily makes good decisions and bad decisions every day He said the key thing was not to fear making a bad decision, but to strive to make more good decisions than bad ones. I believe it. Big decisions often loom large in our own stories, the mental autobiographies that we write and rewrite for our own consumption. No doubt some decisions are biggies. But what may have cumulative greater force in our lives is the sum of the thousands and thousands of little decisions. They have more power than we know to make us who we are.
